wabi-sabi

The beauty of art is knowing how unique and imperfect it can be. It is important to acknowledge that nothing lasts forever, nothing is fully complete and nothing is perfect. This display was inspired by the design concept called “Wabi-Sabi”. In Japanese “Wabi” stands for “rustic simplicity” or “understated elegance”, while “Sabi” interprets as “enjoying the imperfection.” A fundamental principle of Wabi-Sabi is the connection to earth and natural materials with an authentic accent. Wabi-sabi centers on soft greens, shades of taupe, and grey.
My vision was to be as substantial as possible and use materials that could be repurposed, for example the mannequins that were used were actually headed to the landfill and I found the perfect opportunity to create something that had been occupying my mind for a while. This was the perfectly imperfect blank canvas I needed. I aspired to create the juxtaposition between natural elements and stone materials. I wanted to create an atmospheric display of serenity and tranquility. I used warm, neutral and organic tones as my color palette.
Furthermore, this display breaks the gender barrier (intentionally). For the “male” mannequin, I wanted it to depict strength and power but also the fragilness and vulnerability. As for the “female” mannequin, it represents the divine femininity as well as power and strength.

Thank you to @whitewatercambria for allowing me to display my artwork for the month of October.

Cheers!
